family day @dogwood gallery

above is my friend, nadia. she spent some time in my frame shop yesterday. nadia is a 5" screech owl. despite her very direct hissing, i enjoyed her company. she wasa participent in the winged ambassodors program, introducing people to birds of prey. of course, her habitat is endangered by development. she seemed cosy enough back in my frame shop; but these birds need more open space. come visit the gallery this coming weekend & learn more about the southern conservation trust & what they do to preserve nadia's enviroment. for more details on scheduled events visit www.sctlandtrust.org

billy lee teaching raku

last saturday, our friend, billy lee, set up his homemade kiln on the lawn next to our gallery & demonstrated glazing & firing of raku pottery. some pieces were glazed to provide a crackle finish. we added horse hair to other pieces to gain carbon imprints. it was always surprising to see what emerged from the 1800 degree kiln. billy is one of a kind & we all had a great afternoon. thanks to angie breyne for adding her expertise to this event.

green art

these 3 works by georgia rowswell consist of recycled paper, kudzu & bamboo. cheese cloth was woven into the paper works for added texture. dyes mixed from natural ingredients create the pigments on each piece. the complexity of materials & application continue to amaze me. # 1 is " winter's blanket". # 2 is "invasive species". & # 3 is "palm tree".

2 frames today

above are 2 completed frames. # 1 is a tapestry mounted onto a acid-free foamboard, secured into place w/ micro-stitch fasteners & totally reversible. a black 8-ply mat was used to create a greater vacuum between the fabric & glass. the larson-juhl moulding completes the design w/ perfect color & scale, but mostly the shape of the profile mimicks the movement in the tapestry.
# 2 is a newspaper that david boyd, jr. brought over. it was a drop sheet for his class study of jackson pollack. items like this fascinate me. happenstance art. white 8-ply w/ a bainbridge metal frame. very contemporary.
